6 Most Reliable Hyundai Cars
Hyundai Motor Company was established in 1967 in South Korea. It has since grown to become the third largest automaker in the world and currently operates as the Hyundai Motor Group, having merged with Kia Motors and Genesis Motors. . Hyundai has the largest integrated vehicle manufacturing plant in the world, which easily explains its annual output of 1.6 million car units. We examine the popular Hyundai models that the automaker has produced in the past four decades of its existence.
2011 – present Hyundai Veloster(FS)
The Veloster was first introduced during the Detroit Auto Show in 2011 and was marketed as the replacement of Hyundai Tiburon, which had been discontinued in 2008. This coupe is categorised under the sport subcompact cars, but differs from its competitors with its three asymmetrical door design. Basically, the Veloster has two doors on the passenger side and one large door on the driver side, a style that is more common in minivans. The 2017 Hyundai Veloster has come under fire for its weak base engine, which compromises on its sportiness and the use of too much plastic in its interiors.
1994-present Hyundai Accent
Also known as the Hyundai Verna in South Korea, the Accent first came into the market in 1994. This sub compact has been marketed under different name plates depending on the location. The 2017 Hyundai Accent was highly rated because of its great looks, performance and affordability. This Accent competes effectively with rivals such as Honda Fit, Chevrolet Sonic and Nissan Versa.
1990-present Hyundai Elantra
Now in its sixth generation, the Hyundai Elantra first made its debut in 1990. It has performed fairly well considering the stiff competition it receives from the Honda Civic and Volkswagen Golf. In fact, in the US, the Hyundai Elantra is rated amongst the top three compact cars. While both the Civic and Golf have a lot of power, they may not measure up in terms of fuel efficiency. Hyundai Elantra also has a roomy cabin, comfortable seating and a host of safety features, which make it a popular car for the daily commute.
2004-Present Hyundai Tucson
Named after Tucson in Arizona, this compact crossover SUV debuted in South Korea in 2004 and has been one of the best-selling SUVs for Hyundai. The Tucson has, over the years, undergone various modifications. The 2017 Hyundai Tucson is part of the third generation Tucsons, and it features a spacious interior with comfortable seats. It is also highly rated in terms of safety and is just as fast as its rivals, the Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5. The only shortcoming with the 2017 Hyundai Tucson is that its interior is not as upgraded as the rest of compact SUVs in its category.
2000-Present Hyundai Santa Fe
Even though Hyundai started production of Santa Fe in 2000, it was not until 2001 when the first model hit the market. Initially, this model was limited to the compact crossover SUV but in 2006, Hyundai began producing the mid-size crossover SUV under the Santa Fe models. As Hyundai’s first SUV, the Santa Fe was initially received with a lot of skepticism, mostly over its looks. However, once it hit the US market, it quickly gained popularity and became Hyundai’s best seller in the American market.
The second generation of the Santa Fe was unleashed in 2008 and won the Consumer Reports top choice in the US. Hyundai proceeded to produce the Santa Fe Sport version as an option in the third generation of the crossover SUV model. The 2012 Santa Fe Sport had a longer wheelbase in comparison to the base model. The five-seater sportier version replaced the Veracruz. The 2017 Santa Fe has a V6 engine and is the largest SUV that Hyundai currently offers, seating up to seven people. Although its sporty counterpart, the 2017 Santa Fe Sport is a cool car, it still fails to match up to rivals with its smaller base engine and strong semblance to the Tucson.
1985-Present Hyundai Sonata
The Sonata debuted in the South Korean market in 1985 and was produced as a replacement for the Hyundai Stellar. In fact, the base model for the first generation Sonata was derived from the Stellar, with upgrades to the engine as well as facelifts being done to create this car. The car was mainly sold in South Korea with a few exports to New Zealand and Canada, but subsequent models were exported widely across the globe.
Fast forward to the third generation and we have the award-winning 2017 Hyundai Sonata. This model was carried over from its 2016 predecessor and has received great recognition for features such as affordability, safety and reliability, spacious cargo room and being a smooth ride overall. All these make it one of the best selling family cars in the world.
