4 Important Happenings in the UAE automotive industry in 2017

From technological inventions to changes in traffic laws, 2017 was abuzz with activity in the automotive industry. The UAE was not left behind either and we list four major happenings that we witnessed during this year.

a) New Traffic Laws

In a bid to enhance safety on the roads and reduce fatalities and casualties, the UAE
revised its traffic laws in 2017. These new laws have resulted in stiffer penalties for
traffic violators and lowered speed limits along different roads as well. We await to see
whether these changes have had any impact on the number of accidents.

b) Tesla Showroom in Dubai

Even though Tesla had already set up shop in the Gulf region, it was encouraged by the efforts of the UAE government towards electrifying public transport and went ahead to open a showroom in Dubai in July 2017. This coincided with the launch of the Model X, the cheapest Tesla so far. The enticements provided by the UAE government to electric car buyers also incentivized the Tesla move to Dubai as more people in the UAE are interested in purchasing electric and hybrid vehicles.

c) Air Taxi Drones

The launch of the autonomous air taxi drones in the UAE set tongues wagging and for good reason. Not only will commuters be treated to a bird’s eye view of Dubai’s famous skyline, the 18 rotor self-driven drones are expected to substantially reduce traffic by shortening a 2 hour journey to a mere 20 minutes ride.

d) Dubai International Motor Show

The Dubai International Motor Show held in November was refreshingly memorable. This year, car enthusiasts were treated to the launch of the new Rolls Royce Phantom, Mazda CX5 and Infiniti QX80. In addition, major showstoppers in the auto industry were also displayed during the event including the breathtaking Mercedes AMG project One, the stunning Ferrari Portofino and Chevrolet ZR1 amongst others.

These are just but a few of the happenings that we will remember in 2017and as we usher in a new year, we look forward to even bigger things.
