Earlier this year, Ford launched its first ever performance SUV in the form of the recently redesigned 2019 Edge. The new SUV is expected to hit the markets in mid- 2019 and has already set tongues wagging for good reason. Ford has already revealed that while the former trim levels will be retained including the SE, SEL and Titanium trim, the Sport Edge will be replaced with the ST Trim.
Very few changes have been made to the exterior of the new Edge and from the outside, the 2019 model is still characteristically a Ford Edge. Similar to the 2015 production, the 2019 Ford Edge will have the chrome window trims and a roof mounted back that extends to the roofline. While Ford chose to reduce the size of the hexagonal grille on the fascia, it has restyled the front bumper to include a new design around the fog lights and the lower front decoration. There is also the ST trim model which spots a bigger grille complete with a mesh and some stylish black highlights. Furthermore, Ford also chose to change its wheel designs. The ST trim gets the standard 20-inch wheels while those who want something extra have the option of getting the 21-inch five alloys wheels with a gloss black finish. The taillights and tailpipes have also been redesigned to give this car a smoldering finish.
The interior of the car has been transformed into a roomier cabin through the switching of the shifter into rotary dial controlling a new eight speed automatic transmission. The shifter has been replaced with a rotary dial that will now control the new eight speed automatic transmission. This has made room for a larger central console, lending the cabin some stylish modern looks. Besides this change, the infotainment has also received a much needed wireless charging pad. The infotainment has also been changed to include the Edge’s Sync 3 infotainment system which basically supports the Ford + the Amazon Alexa application and this simply enables drivers to access smart- home assistants from their vehicles. In addition, all the new Edges will include a Wi-Fi hotspot that can support up to 10 devices and onboard data connection.
The engine of the new Edge has been updated replacing the mid-level naturally aspirated 3.5 liter V 6 option with the turbocharged inline-four EcoBoost engine. Of all the 2019 Ford Edge trims the sport version or ST trim has had the most work on the engine including the second generation twin turbo charged 2.7-liter, EcoBoost V-6 engine, an upgrade from the four cylinder engine. This engine makes the Edge ST trim the most powerful vehicle amongst its rivals.
There are very few cars that can compare to the horsepower of the Edge Sport Trim which has a 335hp and 380 lb-ft of torque. This is a major improvement from the Sport Edge which initially had 315hp and 350 lb-ft. Given that the Sport is already a great drive, it is expected that the additional horsepower and torque as well as the eight speed automatic transmission will give this drive a major boost.
Apart from the engine the Edge has also had a few changes on the terrain management system and the new Edge now includes four drive modes that can be alternated as you drive depending on your environment. These include the normal drive, mud/rut, grass/gravel/snow and sand drive. The new model also spots the custom FTX off-road package which has also been upgraded to include the Ford-trail control system. This is great news for drivers who often travel on asphalt surfaces because this system helps you to cruise through such roads.
The 2019 Edge has a few important assistant features. Safety features in this car includes the forward collision warning feature. This is complete with the auto braking, blind spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, lane keep assist and post collision braking, which is a first in a non-luxury SUV. Another first on a non-luxury SUV that Ford has added on the Edge is the evasive steering assist which basically enhances the ability of the driver to steer and maneuver around slow or stationary vehicles at the last minute. Ford has also included the ACC which has the stop-and- go technology with segment- first lane centering feature.
The Ford Edge has definitely tweaked things in its latest model and it is expected that these changes will give a wide berth to rivals such as the Nissan Murano and Hyundai Santa Fe. The features of the ST model by far outshine those of these competitors. Increased performance is expected especially considering that this is Ford Performance team’s first attempt at a tuned SUV. Prices of the 2019 Ford Edge are yet to be revealed.
