Road trips are good for the soul. After all, it’s about enjoying the journey not simply arriving at a destination. They also happen to be super trendy with thousands of road trips to choose from. So, if you’re wondering where to start your epic journey and glam up your Instagram cred – you’re in luck. Wecashanycar has analysed more than 12 million Instagram posts using #roadtrip over the last five years.

This is what the results revealed!

Eager Insta-users have confirmed some firm road trip favourites and some interesting surprise options.

1) Great Ocean Road, Australia – 87,190 posts

Topping the list with 87k posts is Australia’s Great Ocean Road. This amazingly scenic journey is 400 miles of sheer sea cliffs and beautiful beaches with countless koala and kangaroo spotting opportunities. A highlight of the trip is the famous Twelve Apostles and Otway National Park.

2) Route 66, USA – 62,680 posts

The USA’s iconic Route 66 comes in at second place with 62k posts. Considered an epic road trip and easily one of the most famous in the world, it covers a whopping 2,448 miles. Route 66 is a unique blend of stunning landscapes that winds its way through eight US states, beginning in Chicago and ending in Los Angeles.

3) The Outback, Australia – 42,918 posts

Australia makes it into the top three again, this time the Outback seals the deal with 43k posts. Ideally suited for an epic 4WD adventure, this journey will show you the ancient parts of Australia, like Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Make your way through 1,864 miles of vastly changing scenery and explore the untouched beauty of the outback.

4) The Big Sur, USA – 33,416 posts

The Big Sur road trip is a rugged stretch of coastline between California’s Carmel and San Simeon. Garnering 33k Insta posts, this unforgettable 90-mile journey is a twisty magnificence of sun and sea, offering you spectacular views of the California coastline and including highlights like Bixby Bridge and McWay Falls.

5) Monument Valley, USA – 31,332 posts

9) Sicily, Italy – 14,628 posts

Keeping with the Italian theme comes Sicily. The island road trip has a unique flavour that’s been delighting travellers for years. Some of the rich archaeological sites date back 2,700 years!
