Electric cars are powering up in the UAE

Electric car charging

The popularity and affordability of electric cars has increased exponentially in recent years and particularly in the UAE since Tesla’s recent grand showroom opening in Dubai. Given that many auto manufacturers are now producing an electric car option to suit the budget of every driver, the reality of even more people owning and driving electric cars has also increased. UAE residents might also want to take advantage of the recent government incentives for electric car owners. Wecashanycar took this opportunity to review the top three electric cars that will be launched in 2018.

1. 2018 Chevrolet Bolt

After the success of the Chevrolet Bolt EV that was debuted in 2017, General Motors is not wasting time in unleashing a successor. Covering 258 miles on a single charge, the 2018 Bolt EV will be available in the US in mid-year and is expected to sell at $37,000. It takes approximately 9hours to charge this car on a level 2 charger and 30 minutes to get 90% juice on a level 3 charger. The new version of the Bolt EV is already performing excellently with more than 20,000 vehicles sold even before its launch.

Two trim levels will be produced with the base model featuring a 10.2 inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as 4G LTE mobile Wi-Fi and proximity key entry and push-up buttons. Upgrades of this will be availed at additional costs through the Comfort and Convenience Package which includes heated seats and steering wheel. You can also opt for the Driver Confidence Package which will feature faster charging blind-spot warning, rear cross- traffic alert, rear parking sensors among other things.

2. Jaguar I-Pace

The Jaguar I-Pace is one of the key rivals of the Tesla Model 3 and one of the most awaited electric vehicles of 2018. It is expected that the 2018 production will retain most of the features that were shown during the concept that was unveiled in 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. The stylish concept I-Pace featured an aluminum body with a 258 pound-feet torque and has its 90- kWh battery pack in the floor. It is expected that this electric sportscar will produce 200 horsepower and will move to 60 mph within 4 seconds covering 310 miles in one charge. Starting at a base price of around $100,000m Jaguar intends to unveil this amazing car in the second half of 2018.

3. 2018 Audi E-tron Quattro

Close on the heels of the Jaguar I-Pace is the Audi E-tron Quattro which will be Audi’s first all- electric production. This SUV is expected to be launched in mid-2018 and is said to cover 311 miles in one charge. Similar to the I-Pace, the Audi E-tron Quattro will also have 95kWh Tesla – like battery on the floor but is expected to offer stiff competition to the latter in terms of drivability. This is because of the 3 electric motors that will power the E-tron, a single on the front axle and 2 driving the rear wheels. Although the E-tron Quattro can move from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds, its top speed is only 131mph. Prices for this electric car remain unconfirmed with Jaguar predicting a price between Audi Q5 and Q7 which technically means ranges of $41,000 to $49,000.

Albeit smaller and slower, if you are looking for a more affordable electric car, the 2018 Nissan Leaf is your best bet. On the other hand, BMW fans should expect a fresher, sportier and more fun drive from the 2018 BMW i3. It’s definitely an exciting time for electric car lovers because these are just but a tip of the iceberg of the electric cars that manufacturers have in store for us in 2018.
